US Search Background Check Review

Our #4 pick for top background check sites in 2026.

US Search has been in the people search business since 1993 — longer than almost anyone. One of the original online background check services, it has earned a solid reputation for reliable lookups at a budget-friendly price. The search speed alone sets it apart. We put it through its paces to see how well it holds up against newer competition.

US Search has been around since 1993, which makes it one of the original online background check services — a true veteran in an industry full of newcomers. While that kind of longevity earns some automatic credibility, it also raises a fair question: has the company kept up with the times, or is it coasting on history?

To find out, I ran a test search on someone I know well: a former colleague who has lived in several states, had a few run-ins with traffic court, and has a somewhat complicated address history. I wanted to see how much US Search could surface, how fast, and how accurately. Spoiler: the speed surprised me.

Interface & Search Process

The first thing that struck me was how clean the US Search homepage looks. It is a significant departure from the cluttered feel some older services still carry. You get a straightforward name search form front and center, with additional tabs for reverse phone lookup, address search, and email search. Simple, no friction.

After entering a name, you are asked for an email address before seeing any results. A list of possible matches then appears, showing each person’s name, approximate age, and last known city — enough to narrow things down without giving away the full report for free. Once you select the right person, you create an account and pay before the full report unlocks.

Search Results Page

The results page found my test subject without any trouble. Rather than forcing a single result on me, it showed multiple possible matches with age and location details alongside each name. That made it easy to identify the right person quickly.

What stood out most was the speed. US Search was noticeably faster than most competitors I have tested — results appeared without any waiting screen or progress bar. It was one of the snappiest search experiences in this entire category.

Report Page

The report is displayed on a single scrollable web page organized into clearly labeled sections. It is manageable once you get your bearings, but a tabbed layout or PDF download option would make navigation easier for longer reports. That said, the data itself was well-organized and easy to read through.

Personal Information

The basics were all there and accurate: full name, current address, a solid list of previous addresses going back nearly a decade, date of birth, and known aliases. The address history in particular impressed me — it surfaced addresses I did not already know about, which is exactly what you want from a service like this.

Contact Information

US Search returned two phone numbers — one current, one older — and a couple of email addresses. The current number was accurate. Email addresses had “Valid Since” dates listed next to them, which is a helpful indicator of how fresh the data is. Reverse phone and email lookups are also available as separate tools if you are starting from a number rather than a name.

Relatives & Associates

The relatives section was one of the stronger parts of the report. It correctly identified immediate family members and listed several known associates. This is genuinely useful if you are trying to reconnect with someone who may have moved or changed their number — following the thread through family connections often gets results when a direct search does not.

Social Media Profiles

US Search found a LinkedIn and a Facebook account for my test subject. Accurate for what it surfaced, but not exhaustive. Our top picks return more profiles — particularly from smaller and less obvious networks. US Search handled the major ones without issue, but if deep social media coverage matters to you, it is worth keeping in mind.

Criminal & Traffic Records

Criminal and traffic records coverage was solid and on par with what I have seen from the other providers in this category. US Search found the traffic violations in my test subject’s history without any issues. No complaints here — the core criminal data is accurate and present.

The one caveat is premium data. Detailed financial records like bankruptcies, tax liens, and court judgments are not included in the base subscription. Accessing that data costs an additional $24.95 per report as an upgrade. For most personal searches that is not a dealbreaker, but it is worth knowing upfront if financial records are what you are after.

Additional Features

Reverse Phone Lookup

US Search has been doing reverse phone lookups since the early days, and that experience shows. I plugged in a number and got back a name, address, and carrier information quickly and accurately. If you regularly need to identify unknown callers, this is one of the stronger tools in the lineup.

Address & Email Lookup

Address and email reverse lookups are available as add-ons. Starting from an address to find out who currently lives there, or from an email to connect it to a name — both tools worked well in testing. The address lookup in particular was useful for identifying current residents at a known location.

US Search Pro

US Search offers a “US Search Pro” bundle that combines background checks, phone lookup, address lookup, and email lookup into one plan. If you plan to use multiple search types regularly, it is worth looking into rather than stacking individual subscriptions.

Pricing

PlanPriceIncludes
Background + Phone Trial BEST VALUE$1.99 5-day trial*
(then $19.86/mo)
Unlimited background reports + phone lookup
Background Reports (monthly)$19.99/moUnlimited background check reports
Premium data upgrade$24.95/reportBankruptcies, liens & judgments

The $1.99 five-day trial that bundles background checks and phone lookup is the best entry point. After the trial it rebills at $19.86/month. Standalone background reports run $19.99/month. One frustration worth flagging: there is no pricing page on the website, so costs only appear after starting a search. Canceling also requires a phone call rather than an online option.

Customer Service

US Search offers phone support at (888) 712-0108 and email support, Monday through Friday, 7am–4pm PT. The hours are reasonable, and the company responds actively to customer complaints on review sites. Just be prepared to call if you want to cancel — that is an extra step that some competitors have already eliminated.

Our Verdict: Pros & Cons

Strong reverse phone lookup
Clean, modern interface
$1.99 trial includes phone lookup
Premium data costs $24.95/report extra
No report monitoring
No dark web monitoring
No upfront pricing page
Cancellation requires a phone call

Bottom Line

US Search earns its spot on this list. The search speed alone is worth noting — it was faster than any other service I tested, and the core data quality is solid. For a basic people search — current address, phone number, address history, relatives, and criminal records — it delivers reliably at a price that is hard to argue with.

Where it falls short is add-ons. US Search is a no-frills product. There is no dark web monitoring, no report monitoring, and premium financial data like bankruptcies and liens costs extra at $24.95 per report. For users who just want fast, accurate lookups without paying for features they will never use, that is actually a reasonable tradeoff. For users who want everything bundled in one package, our top picks are the better choice.
